Two of these groups include the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (NNIRR) and Larkin & Lacey.


NNIRR has for a long time now been advocating for the rights of the migrants in various ways. Twenty years ago, NNIRR partook in the formation of Migrants Rights International (MRI). MRI is a global network bringing together the migrant rights organizations around the globe. This organization has relentlessly worked to strengthen the role and the voice of migrants globally. Today, NNIRR actively collaborate with the Global Coalition on Migration to execute its mandate. Global Coalition on Migration is a multi-sector alliance born out of MRI. This group is also in a working relationship with Women in Migration Network for the same purpose. The achievements of NNIRR so far are immense. It has helped organize delegations of U.S. refugees and immigrants to take part in important global events like UN Conference Against Racism and Xenophobia, in South Africa. This group also successfully organized a protest to the World Trade Organization ministerial meeting. NNIRR has also supported the intervention by migrant civil societies in the Global Forum on Migration and Development. Ideally, it has helped maintain the relevance of human rights and the global migrants’ empowerment.

Larkin & Lacey

Lacey and Jim have dedicated the $3.75 million settlement to finance the various organizations fighting for human rights in Arizona. The two philanthropists are the founders of the Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media. The settlement resulted from the arrest of the two Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a Maricopa County Sheriff. These journalists were arrested at night while at their homes and subsequently jailed for the reason that they revealed the grand jury proceedings to expose the Sherriff.

Lacey and Larkin then sued the county of Maricopa and subsequently won the case to earn the compensation. These journalists agreed to use this money in supporting the civil, human and migrant rights work. The fund will be used to advocate human, migrant and civil rights and also civic participation and the freedom of speech throughout the state of Arizona. One of the organizations set to benefit from this fund is the “la línea fronteriza” – the Mexican border.

The Groups Dick DeVos’s $139 Million Funded

Potter’s House and Grand Rapids Christian School have been two of the main recipients of the DeVos’s operational funds. They started up the DeVos Foundation and Education Freedom Fund to assist needy families in obtaining funds to cover tuition costs. In more recent years they’ve started supporting charter schools and also were the founding donors to the West Michigan Aviation Academy, the nation’s first aviation-based charter school.


ArtPrize, an arts competition in downtown Grand Rapids is another beneficiary of Dick DeVos’s gifts. He also contributed $22 million to help complete the Kennedy Center’s art institute, which was then renamed the Dick & Betsy DeVos Institute for Arts Management. He was also the inspiration behind Grand Action Committee, a commercial and entertainment complex development organization that helped Grand Rapids city leaders bring in more business and entertainment to the downtown area. Dick DeVos also contributes to health organizations, colleges, churches and Republican political action groups such as Hudson Institute and Heritage Foundation.


Dick DeVos began his business career at Amway Corporation, a direct selling company his father Richard DeVos Sr. founded, and Dick was vice president of sales and marketing for several years, and then later CEO for 10 years. He also served as President of the Orlando Magic for three years when his family bought the ownership stake in the NBA franchise. In 1989 Dick DeVos founded a business investment company that’s also partnered with Huron River Ventures known as The Windquest Group. Since leaving Amway Corporation, The Windquest Group has been his primary work. He also ran in the 2006 governor’s race though he lost, and also authored the 1998 book “Rediscovering American Values.”
