Not every podcast producer thinks about legacy in terms of the next generation of creators. Greg Soros does. The Austin-based podcaster and founder of Podcraft Media Lab has made mentorship a defining feature of his professional identity, channeling time and resources into the Podcast Academy’s diversity fellowship to give emerging voices the tools and connections they need to compete.
The program Soros runs goes deeper than technical coaching. Fellows learn production fundamentals narrative structure, sound design, pacing but they also receive training in the commercial side of podcasting. How do you approach an advertiser cold? What does a distribution agreement actually mean for ownership and creative control? How do you build listener loyalty before you have the numbers to show a sponsor?
“What Greg Soros understands is that mentorship isn’t charity it’s strategic ecosystem building,” says Maria Rodriguez, a fellowship alumna whose investigative podcast “Border Stories” won a major award after completing the program. Rodriguez describes Soros as someone who shared the business acumen that transforms passion projects into sustainable media ventures, not just the craft knowledge.
Building Careers, Not Just Shows
The outcomes support that description. Several of Soros’s mentees have landed distribution deals with major networks. Three shows mentored through Podcraft reached six-figure download milestones within twelve months of launching a pace that most independent creators do not hit in their first few years. Soros attributes this not to any single technique, but to combining creative training with the kind of industry access that was previously reserved for people with the right connections.
