A Short Review of RAINN’s Efforts to Stop Sexual Abuse and Increase Awareness

In 2022, RAINN reached an important milestone when it helped its 4-millionth victim through its many services. Since 1994, Scott Berkowitz RAINN has been the face and drive behind this inspiring organization which seeks to provide awareness training, workplace and school related anti-sexual abuse programs, the running of many different hotlines throughout the world and its goal to improve how victims of sexual assault are treated in the workplace, at school and in the justice system itself.

Stopping sexual assault and violence begins with education about the issue. In the past, there were negative stereotypes of sexual assault victims that made seeking help almost a second assault in its brutality and lack of understanding and common empathy. RAINN is helping to change those views on a daily basis one person at a time.

Today, sexual assaults are happening to younger and younger persons. This has created a greater need for more training of educators and positions of authority through which victims of sexual assault and violence may need to traverse in their quest for healing and justice. RAINN takes its programs to the schools and college campuses in an effort to increase awareness and get the word out on where to seek assistance.

In the past, employers, schools and other places where sexual violence may occur were not held accountable for brushing sexual abuse allegations under the rug so to speak. RAINN is at the forefront of changing how local and federal governments respond to outcries from victims and their concerned families.

The numbers are starting to show how these educational and other efforts are helping to decrease abuse cases involving sexual misconduct or abuse. Today, many victims receive kind, understanding and compassionate help through the organization’s many fine hotline staffers and program volunteers. The services offered by RAINN include the newer Redefining Resilience learning series for child sexual assault victims and a Lean on Me video program for caregivers and parents.
