Botstein’s journey began in Switzerland, where he was born to Polish parents who fled the horrors of Nazi persecution. At just two years old, he immigrated to the United States, where he would grow to become an influential figure in both academia and the arts. Serving as Bard College’s president since 1975, Leon Botstein has been instrumental in transforming the institution into a beacon of progressive education.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Botstein has made remarkable contributions to the world of music. As the music director and principal conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra, he has brought an innovative approach to classical music. Additionally, he founded and leads The Orchestra Now, an orchestra designed to provide advanced training and performance opportunities for graduate-level musicians.
