Akeem Jamal, RIOC CEO

Akeem Jamal is the current President and CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), a public benefit corporation responsible for managing and developing Roosevelt Island, a two-mile-long island in the East River of New York City.

Mr. Jamal’s career in public service began over two decades ago when he worked for the New York City Council as a Legislative Policy Analyst. He then served as the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at the New York City Department of Small Business Services before being appointed to his current position at Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation(RIOC) in 2019.

Since taking over as President and CEO, Jamal has been focusing on improving the quality of life for the residents of Roosevelt Island by ensuring that the island is a safe, clean, and welcoming place to live and work. He has also been committed to promoting economic development on the island by encouraging new businesses to set up shop and helping existing businesses to grow.

One of Mr. Jamal’s main priorities has been to modernize the infrastructure on Roosevelt Island. Under his leadership, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation(RIOC) has invested millions of dollars in upgrading the island’s public spaces, including parks, playgrounds, and waterfront areas.

He has also overseen the implementation of several sustainability initiatives, such as installing solar panels on the island’s buildings and converting the island’s transportation fleet to electric vehicles.

Another key focus for Akeem Jamal has been to improve transportation on and off the island.

He has worked closely with the New York City Department of Transportation to improve the reliability of the island’s tramway and subway services. He has also introduced a shuttle bus service to provide more convenient access to the island’s businesses and attractions.

Mr. Jamal has also been a vocal advocate for social justice and equality on Roosevelt Island. He has worked to ensure that the island’s diverse community is represented in decision-making processes and has implemented several initiatives to promote inclusivity and diversity.

Jamal is a New York State Economic Development Council member and the National Association of Public Administrators.
